Hi Pitsiriko,
My name is Christina. I am half Greek, half Czech, and I grew up in Canada. In 2002-2008 I lived in Greece. I left right when all the shit hit the fan…. Each year I return for two or three months. I wanted to open a yoga studio in Athens, but it wasn’t the right time.
So, I come from a pretty rich history of refugee and immigration. My grandparents (on my mom’s side) they came to Greece from Turkey as Pondiaki prosfiges, and settled around Kilkis, then during the antartiko, they went to the mountains, and my grandfather spent some time exoria in Folegandros and also in Gedikule. After that they managed to get to Czech. My mom was born in Czech, she married my dad (who is Czech) and we, my older sister and I, were also born in Brno.
In 1977 my parents signed the Charter 77 that Vaclav Havel wrote with a few others, and most of the people that signed that were sent to jail or left. We came to Greece in 1979. Back then the law was that if a Greek man married a foreign woman she could have a working permit, but if a Greek woman married a foreign man, he was not eligible for a working permit…
This made things really complicated, so the Canadian red cross sponsored us and we moved to Canada in 1981…just soon after Andreas Papandreou got in, and things started to change in Greece…laws i mean.
I am writing to you from Berlin, right now listening to a Turkish couple fighting cause my window is wide open. I am visiting my sister. I live in Prague right now.
So, I am writing to you to tell you that my younger sister and I are planning to walk to Greece this summer from Brno to Thessaloniki. We are planning to walk 30km each day and to teach yoga daily too. The way we see it, is that we will walk on walking paths and secondary roads, we will sleep in tents outside different villages, and then when we are in the city we will have places to stay. We are going to walk through Vienna, Budapest, Novi Sad, Belgrade, Skopje and then boom Saloniki. We are promoting this walk as a peace walk.
The walk will be a total of 1500km, daily walking teaching yoga and connecting to people and land. Anyways, we will be documenting this too. What i want to be documenting is that we are the faces of third generation Greek refugees, we are what so many people are threatened of, and ignorant of.
With everything that has been happening in Greece (but not exclusively), I have been inspired to walk the way refugees do, I have been inspired to support in some way their story. I am not a nationalist in any way, but i love Greece and I hate how she treats her refugees. So the documentary aspect is sort of a side thing from the walk, but it is a two or three in one deal.
We need a good team, we are three girls, one who will be filming, she has a similar story to ours but both her parents are Greek so she stayed in Greece once she arrived. Her parents were in Poland and went to Sweden, she lives in Scotland.
We need two drivers. We need two men to be part of the core team, to help set up camp, to help with cooking, and well with whatever might go wrong and well even as a sort of protection really.
I was wondering if you know of any people who you trust that are unemployed and would be willing to spend August and September with us on the road? I know we don’t know each other, but maybe you have people in mind that could participate in this project? We are now looking for funding for the food and gas, the gas will be paid from Greece and back down again, and so will the food, we will be on a vegetarian diet, so if they want meat…it will come from their pockets (just mentioning this cause Greeks have a hard time with it sometimes)
Maybe it is not professional the way I have written to you, and all that jazz.
I just wanted to let you know about our last minute project which starts on August 01st.2012.
